Gay City News Praises Brel!

Over at the Zipper, "Jacques Brel" is still in fine shape. Robert Cuccioli and Gay Marshall are the only holdovers from the original revival cast, and they are splendid. Marshall in particular handles the emotional range of these songs with a proficiency that is never anything less than astounding. The newcomer Constantine Maroulis is a charming, boyish singer with enthusiasm depth and sophistication, and the understudy I saw Tamra Hayden is divine. If anything the often rocky balance between innocence, experience, existentialism and sheer joy at life seems more present and poignant. Plus, you can get both these shows at a discount. Now you have no excuse to miss them.
